Son and Daughter Day traces back to 1936 in Missouri, where J. Henry Dusenberry started pushing the idea after overhearing a child ask why there wasn't a holiday honoring sons and daughters. It spread fast. By 1945 it was being observed in 22 states, with families placing a flower in a vase for each child as the signature ritual. A 1972 congressional push by Florida's Claude Pepper tried to make a version of it official on the last Sunday in January instead, but that resolution never went anywhere.
